Understanding Deferred Revenue for SaaS
Deferred revenue is one of the most important line items on a SaaS company's balance sheet. It represents the gap between cash collected and revenue earned — a liability that must be carefully tracked and unwound each period.
A deferred revenue waterfall (also called a rollforward or bridge) provides a complete reconciliation:
- Opening balance — deferred revenue carried forward from the prior period
- Additions — new contract value entering the deferred pool (new bookings, renewals, expansions)
- Recognition — revenue earned during the period, reducing the liability
- Closing balance — remaining obligation carried into the next period
This schedule is essential for:
- Month-end close
- Board reporting
- Audit preparation
- Investor due diligence
It answers the fundamental question: “Where did our deferred revenue come from and where did it go?”
